FTUI Presents Jef Caers from Stanford University at Public Lecture on Sustainability in Mining

On Wednesday (21/2), FTUI held a public lecture with a guest lecturer, Jef Caers, at the Department of Industrial Engineering. He is Professor of Earth and Planetary Sciences at Stanford University and founder of Mineral-X. The topic he presented was related to sustainability in mining.

“Burning coal in producing electricity to generate heat is very non-renewable. An alternative to this is shallow geothermal energy which is the use of a constant temperature subsurface and uses a device called a heat pump to move heat up and down,” Jef said.

Sustainable technology actually already exists, but ways to optimize the technology still do not exist. This is certainly important in order to get energy effectively and safely. Thus, the things that need to be done are to explore great concentration, ensure technical sustainability and safety, and execute with speed and space.

In his lecture, Jef explained, “The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in this problem can facilitate our work. AI can be used to decarbonize energy systems, geothermal energy, sustainability in mining and mineral processing, and critical mineral supply chains. Intelligent agents are used for long-term data in acquisition planning, while intelligent prospectors act as informers regarding next steps.”

“We are very happy that Prof. Jef can share his knowledge at FTUI. The lectures he gave were very informative and useful for us as Engineering citizens. I would like to thank Prof. Jef for his willingness to give lectures at FTUI. Hopefully in the future we can re-establish cooperation, “said the Dean of FTUI, Prof. Dr. Ir. Heri Hermansyah, S.T., M.Eng., IPU.
