The history of the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia begins with the offering of young engineers, who are members of the Indonesian Engineers Association, to the first president of The Republic of Indonesia, Bung Karno, to repair heavily damaged protocol roads in Jakarta. At that time, Jakarta was preparing for “Pekan Olahraga Internasional GANEFO” and this offering was well received by Bung Karno. This work led by Ir. Slamet Bratanata, Ir. Roosseno, Ir. Sutami, dan Ir. Soehoed and after the work was completed, the idea to build faculty of engineering in Jakarta came and Bung Karno immediately agreed with this idea, then Prof. Ir. Roosseno was appointed as the first Dean of the Faculty of Engineering. Bung Karno also instructed that the Faculty of Engineering to be part of Universitas Indonesia where the Rector at that time was dr. Syarief Thayeb.
Faculty of Engineering Universitas Indonesia (FTUI) established based on Ir. Sutami idea in March 1963. At that time, Ir. Soekarno as the president of Indonesia choose Prof. Roosseno Soerjohadikoesoemo as the first Dean of FTUI.
On July 17 1964, dr. Syarief Thayeb issued Chancellor’s Decree Number. 76 concerning the establishment of the Faculty of Engineering with the first 3 departments, namely Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering.
FTUI establish two new study programs that are Metallurgical Engineering and Architecture. Four more decades later, the Metallurgical Engineering broadening its fields into Metallurgical and Materials Engineering.
The Gas Engineering Study Program merged with the Chemical Engineering Study Program to form a new Department, namely Gas & Petrochemical Engineering (now Chemical Engineering).
When it was first built, the FTUI was located on the Salemba Campus before finally the new FTUI building was inaugurated on Depok Campus in 1987.
FTUI Masters education began with the opening of the Postgraduate Program in Engineering Science (PPS-BIT) which consists of the first 4 Study Programs, namely Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Metallurgical Engineering.
The Industrial Engineering Study Program gave birth to the Department of Industrial Engineering in 1999. In the same year, the International Class program was opened for the first time.
FTUI’s Doctoral education began with the opening of the Civil Engineering Doctoral Program followed by Electrical Engineering from the merger of the Optoelectrotechnics and Laser Applications Doctoral Program at the University of Indonesia.
Since 2005, the Indonesian Architects Association (IAI) has encouraged the formation of more Architectural Professional Programs (PPAr) in universities. Until 2009, PPAr FTUI was formed under the auspices of the Department of Architecture
UI inaugurated the first regular professional engineer program (PPI) in Indonesia. PPI is a continuation of the Bachelor of Engineering degree to complete the qualifications of graduates to be able to hold the title of engineering profession (Ir.)
