Scholarship for Short-Term Exchange Students – University of Tokyo

Applications are now open for the student exchange program to the University of Tokyo, generously supported by the Sato Yo International Scholarship Foundation. Seize the chance to embark on a transformative journey, immerse yourself in a vibrant culture, and shape your future.

Please read the eligibility, requirements, and important notes before you apply.

Students who have previously participated/enrolled in any program from International Office UI are NOT eligible to join this program.

Eligibility Criteria for Undergraduate

  • A student with active status
  • Students should be at least in their 3rd semester at UI by the time of application
  • Have not registered 144 credits at UI (including credits on the last semester at UI before departing for exchange) by the time of application
  • Mandatory to transfer credits from exchange period to UI
  • Will not graduate from UI until the exchange period is completed
  • GPA ≥ 3.2 (all major)
  • English proficiency standard:
    • TOEFL iBT min. 80
    • IELTS min. 6.5
  • Mandatory to purchase international insurance that cover Covid-19 treatment
  • Mandatory to have a passport before applying
  • Students who have previously participated/enrolled in any international program from international office UI or any other opportunities including IISMA are not eligible
  • Not currently applying for another exchange or study abroad with fee paying program, e.g: IISMA

Eligibility Criteria for Graduate

  • A student with active status
  • Students should be at least in their 2nd semester at UI by the time of application
  • Have not registered 40 credits at UI (including credits on the last semester at UI before departing for exchange) by the time of application
  • Mandatory to transfer credits from exchange period to UI
  • Will not graduate from UI until the exchange period is completed
  • GPA ≥ 3.2 (all major)
  • English proficiency standard:
    • TOEFL iBT min. 80
    • IELTS min. 6.5
  • Mandatory to purchase international insurance that cover Covid-19 treatment
  • Mandatory to have a passport before applying
  • Never participate in IISMA and other physical exchange programs and never participate in an abroad program with a scholarship manages by IO UI

Scholarship Benefits

  • Amount
    • JPY 120,000 per month (Payment calculated by the week for arrival and departure months)
    • Roundtrip airfare
    • Lump-sum exchange grant: JPY 100,000
    • One-way ground transportation expense from the arrival airport to the nearest station to accommodation
  • Duration
    • A minimum of 8 months and maximum of 12 months (will be terminated upon completion of the exchange program), maximum until 2025 July
  • Method of payment
    • Bimonthly (JPY 240,000) bank transfer to the recipient’s Japanese bank account

Required Documents

  • Faculty recommendation letter signed by Dean or Vice Dean with particular information needs to be included
  • Legalized latest transcripts (GPA ≥ 3.2)
  • Latest course plan (IRS)
  • English Proficiency Certificate
  • CV & Motivation Letter
  • Statement letter of willingness not to leave the country if the faculty does not give permission
  • Written approval letter of departure from parents
  • Study plan (optional)
